Currently commanding our attention is Fleamadonna, the South Korean label helmed by designer Jei Kim. Based in Seoul, the brand has successfully expanded its presence to major fashion capitals including Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Antwerp.

Known for a distinct penchant for innovative quirks and vibrant prints, Fleamadonna has earned consistent coverage in titles such as Dazed & Confused Korea, NYLON Japan, Marie Claire, and Harper’s Bazaar Korea. The label has garnered a notable cult following, with its designs frequently spotted on influential figures such as the Wonder Girls and 2NE1. What remains most compelling about this label is its commitment to individualistic concepts that disregard conventional norms.

We spoke with Jei Kim to discuss her upcoming collection and the origins of her creative vision.

Your collections often draw from eclectic sources such as vampires and outer space. What is the primary inspiration behind your Autumn/Winter 2012 collection?

Jei Kim: While preparing for this season, I was designing for several female artists in Korea. One rapper in particular possessed a very strong charisma, which inspired the imagery of lipsticks and bullets. Typically, my inspirations are drawn from my immediate surroundings and friends, but this season felt more specific to a certain energy.

What do you consider to be the defining items within this new collection?

Jei Kim: The lipstick and bullet prints are certainly the focal points. Although the graphics lean towards a casual aesthetic, the choice of satin over jersey ensures the pieces feel luxurious and feminine.

How does this collection evolve from your previous work?

Jei Kim: The core Fleamadonna identity remains prominent through the specific design details. However, the palette has shifted. I have introduced black to provide a more sophisticated and chic foundation, which contrasts with the bright, vivid colours of my earlier collections.

Given that the label’s name was inspired by Madonna, do you envision her wearing your designs?

Jei Kim: That would be a significant milestone. I was deeply influenced by her during the brand’s formative years. Today, I continue to be inspired by many impressive and attractive female artists who possess a similar strength.

How would you define the Fleamadonna woman?

Jei Kim:   She is self assertive and possesses a fundamentally confident character.

What is your personal philosophy regarding fashion?

Jei Kim: Fashion is both my profession and the object of my affection. Everything in my life is linked to fashion; it constantly piques my curiosity and drives my expectations for what clothing can represent.

Were you always destined for a career in design?

Jei Kim: It was a very natural progression for me. I grew up in an environment where clothes were constantly being constructed. My parents operated a boutique, and my father was a pattern maker long before I was born. I never truly entertained any other ambition.

How do you spend your time when you are not immersed in the design process?

Jei Kim: I spend a great deal of time listening to music or conversing with friends. I find that I often absorb new ideas through these social interactions. I also have a deep appreciation for art books and international magazines.

As you celebrate five years of the brand, what are your future objectives?

Jei Kim: I hope to see Fleamadonna continue to grow while sharing engaging designs with our clientele. I am currently planning to establish an overseas branch office within the next three years.

Are there any plans to establish a physical presence in Singapore?

Jei Kim: I would certainly consider it if the right opportunity arose. I would very much like to visit Singapore this year to explore the landscape firsthand.
